With the spring semester coming to a close, it’s time to start considering living options for the next school year. I have put together a list of a few pointers of what to ask and look for when searching for your next home.
Prioritize important factors
Upfront and recurring monthly cost(s)
Proximity to grocery stores, banks, school/work etc
Laundry, utilities, gym etc
Interview each landlord or property manager
Give them relevant info (# bedrooms, price range, move-in date, kids/pets)
Ask for details to confirm each place fits your needs (length of contract, subletting policy etc)
Schedule appointments in the same area around the same time
Don’t see too many in a day
Take pictures to remind yourself
Cross off any you don’t like immediately
Observe exterior of building
Is it well maintained? Cracks in the exterior? Is the landscaping manicured?
Is it easily accessible (parking, handicap accessible)?
Are neighbouring balconies clear of junk?
Is it loud?
Does the neighbourhood look safe?
How close is transportation? Stores?
Observe interior of building
Does it smell?
Are common areas well maintained?
Is safety equipment available? Fire extinguishers, fire doors, smoke detectors
Elevators work? Storage area? Laundry room?
Speak to neighbours if possible…make appointment at night if possible (is it quiet?)
